We recently received this letter from Lex Basden, long time kayaker with the Rambers……

                                                20th January, 2015

 The Secretary,

Illawarra Ramblers Club,

P.O. Box 1231,

Wollongong, 2500.

Dear Patricia,

It is with some sadness that I notify you that I will  not be renewing my membership with the

Ramblers as at well over eighty years of age I become tired easily and am now quite unable to participate

in any activities.

Over the past years I have thoroughly enjoyed the one-day walks and canoe trips, but it is the multi-day canoeing trips

on our lakes and rivers that I will miss most of all – the cheerful companionship of the groups, the changing bushland

as our canoes move past, the wonder of what is around the next bend and even the anxious search in the afternoon

for a camp site are all memories I will never forget.

I am grateful to the Ramblers for the past and offer my best wishes for the future.

Yours sincerely,

(signed)

and from Peter Bique….

I first met Lex on an upper Murray River Paddle which was a steep learning curve for me.  I soon noticed that Lex read the river very well and so I followed him at every possible opportunity.  Lex had so much experience and was always willing to pass on his knowledge on river conditions and the finer points of leading trips.  I am extremely grateful to Lex for passing on all his notes and maps for the Ghost Island paddle.  I am sure the kayaking fraternity and bushwalkers would join me in wishing Lex a happy and very memorable retirement from the Ramblers.
